Introduction

About the project

The NATALIE project, funded by Horizon Europe under the Adaptation to Climate Change Mission, helps EU regions enhance climate resilience by addressing barriers to NbS by focussing on three key areas: technology and science, financial innovation, and societal engagement.

The project brings together 42 partners in Europe to implement 18 NbS across 8 demonstration sites and 5 replication sites across 5 bio-geographical regions of Europe, to observe the full effects of these solutions. NATALIE's Booster Innovation Package includes technical, modelling, and IT solutions, as well as governance, policy, financing, and public engagement strategies to deploy and mainstream NbS across Europe.

Through deploying and testing NbS in collaboration with local stakeholders, NATALIE ensures benefits to ecosystems and communities. The project seeks to address regulatory gaps, enhance capacity building for mainstreaming NbS, and leverage real-time territorial data and advanced analytics for resilience planning. By fostering investments, supporting EU policy implementation, and establishing communities of practice, NATALIE aims to ensure replicability and drive new green projects for climate change adaptation.

Our Role

GIB’s approach and contributions

Co-leading ecosystem-based adaptation investment

We co-lead the work package on investing in ecosystem-based adaptation to identify main funding and financing streams for scaling and speeding up adaptation. We work with local partners and stakeholders to strengthen project pipelines and promote mechanisms that unlock investment in nature.

Outcomes and Impact

Progress, results, and lasting change

8 regions in Europe have adopted 18 NBS solutions and are supported by the societal-economic approach through the NATALIE project.

1 Investment Bundle supports the replicability of NbS in the regions and increases the bankability. The Investment Bundle is a toolkit of three frameworks/methodologies supporting the uptake of NBS.

Comprehensive recommendations for best practices in implementing and scaling validated NbS.
