Infrastructure &

Nature

Drive the integration of nature into infrastructure systems, enabling communities and ecosystems to thrive in harmony.
The Challenge

Infrastructure growth threatens natural ecosystems

Infrastructure and natural ecosystems are deeply interconnected, yet this relationship is often overlooked in development planning. Poor conservation practices and unchecked infrastructure growth are degrading ecosystems, threatening the balance between human needs and environmental protection.

Rising temperatures, unpredictable weather patterns, and extreme events such as floods and droughts further exacerbate these challenges, posing significant risks to ecosystems, communities, and economies globally.

Recognising the value of natural ecosystems and integrating Nature-based Solutions (NbS) into infrastructure design can create a balance between human needs and environmental protection, contributing to both climate mitigation and adaptation. However, two critical challenges remain for its widespread adoption: first, the public sector often lacks the resources and expertise to effectively incorporate NbS and address climate change impacts; second, financial investments in NbS are insufficient to meet international climate targets.

To tackle these urgent issues, GIB provides tailored technical assistance to support the strategic planning and processes of cities and regions, enabling them to effectively incorporate NbS and advance sustainable development.

Our Response

How we create change

Catalysing investments in Nature-based Solutions

GIB drives investments into Nature-based Solutions by guiding stakeholders through financing pathways that support climate-change adaptation and the integration of nature into urban systems. We advocate for optimal risk-reducing strategies such as insurance and blended finance, ensuring sustainable funding for nature-based initiatives.

Developing a Nature-based Solutions pipeline

We assist stakeholders in the origination and development of Nature-based Solutions projects, focusing on pre-feasibility studies, forming strategic partnerships, and prioritising freshwater ecosystems. Our pre-feasibility assessments, successfully tested across Europe, ensure impactful and sustainable solutions.

Technical assistance for climate and nature

Our expert advice and capacity building for stakeholders create implementation pathways for climate adaptation and mitigation, as well as methodologies for assessing and monitoring Nature-based Solutions. GIB integrates Nature-based Solutions into infrastructure projects, delivering services that not only enhance infrastructure resilience but also restore and strengthen the natural environment.

Building capacity for climate action

We empower individuals and institutions in both the public and private sectors by building expertise to tackle climate impacts effectively.
